5-Trouble
Bret dozed and drifted, and soon he was back in the room. Only this time, there was no door. The terrible man and Bret were standing face-to-face. Then Bret turned his back on the man. Before him was an airlock door. It was solidly built, with obvious reinforcement struts. Strangely enough, the door appeared to be purposefully welded shut.
Faintly at first, then louder, Bret could hear a strange sound. He realized what it was--it was the sound of claws scrabbling at the metal. Louder and louder, now banging on the door! The screech of those claws on metal reached a horriffic cocophany! Bret tried in vain to get himself to run, to hide, anything! But he could only stand and watch as ripples and dents formed in the door. Then, with a terrifying, unreal sound, four claw-tips punched through the door...
And at that instant, Bret awoke. Cold sweat dripped off his brow and stung his eyes. A warning was flashing on the Bat's control panel. The engines were overloading! Bret hurriedly went through the emergency shutdown and coolant purge techniques, and the Bat shut down to standby mode. The Bat soon fell from first place.
Apparently, Bret had pushed the engines just a little too far in his effort to get to Sogan early. Now, with the high-speed cruise engines damaged, the Bat could only limp along at medium speed until it reached the Sogan checkpoint at ssA-1. Bret rolled up his sleves and set to work with temporary repairs.
Irridan noticed a message on the comms from the ship Sabre. Captain Hamil apparently wanted to engage in polite small talk, asking about the race's first damaged ship and how the Bat's crew was doing. Irridan just didn't have time for it, with all the patchwork she had to do so the Bat could get into Sogan...

Back on Helix, Iruoko was spending some much-needed time in the recovery ward of the hospital. Not only was she injured from the attack, but she was also exhausted with her work on the ITA and last-minute preparations for the race.
She was very worried when she saw the Bat drop from the lead. Only the fact that she had no way to reach the Bat kept her from running out of the hospital.
Later in the day, however, a nurse announced a visitor...
